Playtesting Feedback and Changes
We recently had our first playtest, and there was quite a bit of feedback. One of the biggest complaints was that the character did not feel good to control, being too slippery or hard to move in the air. Initially, our intention was to have controls that were difficult to use on purpose. It's a classic element of similar games like Jump King or Getting Over It, but it is clear that we missed the mark. Rather than players being frustrated at their own mistakes, they are getting mad at the game for feeling unresponsive. We will be changing the player controller to be less momentum based and more responsive, especially when on the ground. Ideally this will let players move the way they want once they land.
The second thing we noticed was that the playtesters did not utilize the gun mechanic very well. While we were aware that people may struggle since there is currently not a tutorial, we did not expect them to have as much trouble with the mechanic as they did. By adding a short area that forces players to understand all the mechanics of the levitation gun before moving on, we'll help ensure that they understand the mechanics of the game and get a chance to get used to them before failing becomes a major setback.
